Nyc fashion blogger Kathleen Harper's winter outfit idea for work
As much as I'm craving spring, and boy I am READY for it, winter is still here and the cold is sticking around. To keep things fresh, I'm injecting bursts of color into my wardrobe and polishing my looks off with eye-catching accessories.

I've been relying on knotted headbands lately to carry me through bad hair days and/or to be the cherry on top of my OOTDs. I have a black one, a red velvet one, and this canary yellow version, which just so happens to be my favorite. This shade of yellow is surprisingly versatile and I find myself pairing it with every color under the sun.

I've brought my lavender cocoon coat back out this season, and it feels SO right for this time of year. I'm dying to bust out more pastels and embrace warmer weather, but when it's still 30 degrees outside, this coat feels like a solid compromise. I have to say though, it's definitely not my warmest coat, so heavy layering is encouraged — hence my "199x" sweatshirt that I've been wearing on repeat.

I love playing with juxtaposition, and I've recently gotten super into sweatshirts. In order to reasonably wear them at work, I've had to get a little creative with my styling. Here, I'm rocking plaid trousers, which instantly provide polish and professionalism to a notoriously casual piece. I've also layered collared blouses or turtlenecks underneath my sweatshirts, worn blazers over them, or teamed them with a pencil skirt and sneakers.

Nyc fashion blogger Kathleen Harper's puffer coat winter street style
Ever have one of those pieces that makes you feel instantly cool when you put it on? Meet my Levi’s silver puffer coat. Not only is it an item I feel confident in and love wearing, but it makes me feel especially stylish and trendy — no matter what I have on underneath. Maybe there’s some magic secretly woven into these gorgeous marshmallow panels of shiny goodness!

This puffer has been one of my pride-and-joy pieces this past winter. Unique, eye-catching, and certainly statement-making, it’s helped me step up my fashion game in a fun and unexpected way. But it’s not just the metallic finish that I love — the crop shape is super flattering and the down, insulated padding is toasty and soft. Oh and the compliments? Constant ;)

I’ve been having a lot of fun these past few seasons slowly (but surely) revamping my denim closet. For the longest time I played it safe and stuck to basic skinny jeans — maybe throwing in a girlfriend or a high-waisted pair here and there. But for the most part, I had my go-to denim look and I was cool with it. Lately though, I’ve been widening my horizons, playing with mom fits, baggy fits, straight styles, bootcut, and more. The Levi’s Wedgie Straight Fit jean is iconic, and I’ve been rocking this uber high-waisted pair with endless crop tops and tees. I love that they’re subtly sexy while maintaining a relaxed yet modern vibe.

It’s cold, we’re not happy about it, but here we are. I keep thinking spring has GOT to be just around the corner, but who am I kidding? It’s February! We’re easily going to be shivering in our boots for another two whole months. In times like these, I try to refresh my spirit through my wardrobe — think interesting silhouettes, bold colors, fun prints, and unique textures. In other words, my metallic puffer is pulling serious double duty, and I am A-O-K with that 👌

Hugs & Kisses // white booties + statement coat

Nyc fashion blogger Kathleen Harper's 2019 nyfw street style
Getting “dressed up” can take on many different forms. Whether you’re donning a ball gown for a special event or simply wearing a spiffy new blouse with your most flattering jeans, some things never change — and here, it’s the importance of polished outerwear. No matter how you’re dressing for date night, girls night, or even family night, if you’re putting effort in, that effort should extend to your last layer!

A statement coat completes even the simplest outfits, and, in extra chilly times like these, sometimes your coat IS your outfit. Although I have mad love for my trusty Eddie Bauer nearly-floor-length down coat (my mom, little sister, and I all own the same one), I try to step my outerwear game up a notch when I’m going to an event or have special plans. This fur-collar coat by Rebecca Minkoff is one of my favorites because it’s wool (aka warm) and never fails to make an entrance. Not only does it speak to my personality, but wearing it is just so FUN!

For this last Valentine’s-Day-inspired look, I wanted to try something different by incorporating a majority of black. I love how the “XO” on my sweater pops as a result, and in addition, the neutral backdrop really allows my coat to be the hero piece. I’m also rocking my favorite white booties (yes, again ;) but with visible black socks for a fun twist that pulls it all together. And finally, my blue clutch and blue earrings add an interesting and unexpected pop of color that brings a fresh lightheartedness to the whole look.

Surprisingly I was NOT cold during this shoot and yes, it occured just days ago in NYC during February! We were recently blessed with a few rare days of wintertime warmth, and Antonio and I definitely took advantage. It felt so good to be outside — and anyone else who lives in areas that experience harsh winters, I know you can relate — but after 30 degrees days, anything over 50 feels like legit summer, which is why I broke out a mini skirt sans tights! But rest assured, I won’t ACTUALLY be wearing this on Valentine’s Day this year!

At First Blush // Metallic Skirt + Pink Coat

Wednesday, February 6, 2019

Nyc fashion blogger Kathleen Harper's winter date night outfit
As far as Valentine's Day looks go, there's decidedly two vibes: sweet or sexy. This is the former. Dressing up for a special night out is exhilarating, and it's vital for me to feel confident, stylish, and ultimately, like me; which is why I love this charming combo of blush, metallic, and ruffles.

The pleated skirt is one of this season's key pieces, and paired with light pink, this look is wintery yet completely on trend for spring. Playing off spring even more, I added this blush-tone floral bag — it pulls the entire look together.

While I surprisingly haven't been wearing nearly as many dresses or skirts lately as I used to, there's something about Valentine's Day (or even just date night for that matter) that has a tendency to bring out my ultra-feminine side. And with pleated metallic skirts trending hard, I couldn't resist styling one with an undeniably ladylike twist.

I have to admit; I felt like a princess in this look. It also didn't hurt that this location totally looks like the balcony of a castle! But while this outfit is perfect for a date night or a date afternoon, it's also a great combo for an outing with your BFFs — any time of day! The best part? The pop of blush of course!
